Shewhart's box

Demonstration of basic statistics

This demonstration appliance was developed in the fifties by the American statistician Shewhart. Just like the apparatus of Galton this box is an excellent tool to visualize some statistic concepts. Moreover it has the advantage of being simple and cheap.


How it works

The box contains 998 numbered discs. These discs symbolize products in a particular lot. The number stands for instance for a length, a stress, the yield strength or a concentration. By drawing a random number of discs from the box we imitate sampling.

With this box simple techniques can be explained and practised, for instance histograms, circletechnique, Cusum, X-R and Me-R cards, detection of abnormalities in control charts, ...
